Christian Barkey, farmer and stock-raiser, Fairfield
Township, is a native of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, born April 6, 1820, son of
John Barkey and
Susannah Barkey, natives of Northampton County, Pennsylvania, of German descent. When he
was five years of age his parents moved to Ohio and settled in Holmes County where he was reared and lived
until 1851. Christian came to DeKalb and settled on a track of land which is
now his valuable farm in Fairfield Township. This land he had entered about 1841, and at the time of his settlement it was unimproved and heavily timbered. He now has it
under a good state of cultivation, and his improvements are among the best in the township. Mr. Barkey was married March 13, 1851, to
Hannah Herrington, daughter of Thomas and
Elizabeth (Long) Herrington, of Ohio. They are the parents of nine children, eight of whom are living---Mary Ann, John W.,
George., Henry, Sarah E., Samuel, Thomas and James F.
Calvin is deceased.
In politics Mr. Barkey affiliates with the Democratic party.
