Article - Wilbert retires from the Ann Arbor Railroad
|
Wilbert DeWitt KENDALL
Marriage Information: Wilbert married
Elizabeth Ann VALENCOURT, daughter of
Joseph VALLENCOURT
and Virginia. General Notes: In the economic depression of 1893, called a Panic, Wilbert lost his job on the railroad. By the spring of 1895, still without a job, debts piling up, and with three small children to support, Elizebeth decided they would move to the farm. When Wilbert came home he found the furniture packed. The farm was a 30 acre fruit-growing area near Pierport on the shore of Lake Michigan in Manistee County. The living quarters were a log cabin of two rooms and a loft. Her determination to move was because, as she said, "At least we can grow our food." and the fact that another child was expected in the autumn (Lida) had to be considered. Wilbert's father William (supposed) died when Wilbert was very young, his mother remarried after the death of William, a man with last name of Buck, she did not tell Wilbert's who his true father was until he was about 13-14 years old and ready to leave home. After Elizabeth's death he remarried to Nina Beebe Erskine seen in many of the family pictures. *Written by Alma Kendall |
