General Notes:

A letter written by Alice to Monroe before they were married.

Montezuma, Indiana: June 10, 1881

Remembered friend your letter was received and read with much pleasure. I should have written sooner if I had been at home. I went to Terre Haute Saturday and came back Monday. We had a very pleasant visit. My cousin was very anxious for me to stay all week with them. They seemed to think my visit to short. Of course I should have enjoyed staying longer but did not feel like losing so much time. I am very industrious all at once, am I not? Indeed, I was very sorry to hear of you being sick. It is to be hoped you are well by this time. The measles are not so very pleasant after all are they? Oh, yes, do tell me if Miss B. Spangler has had the measles yet or not. I always was amused at her telling about her going to take the measles at such and such a time. Just so they don't kill her she will be all right. I should like very much to see you as I have something to tell you. It does not amount to much, it is just a little joke I heard lately. Is it really so that they are going to celebrate the fourth or rather the third in Clinton this year? If so, let me know for sure and of course I will come to Clinton. Have not heard for sure whether there will be any thing going on here or not. I must compliment your for your kindness. Offering to take me up to annies?, that would be quite a treat to me to get to go home to see the folks. Don't you think me real mean, I have never written home since I came up here. So you see I am better to you than to them, but I am getting so anxious to hear from them so I will write them a long letter this week. I am well aware that they will not write me first. It is not because I did not want to hear from them, it is because I am so careless. I just neglected to write to them. I love to receive letters but as a general thing am not very careless about answering. Of course I suppose they are all well or they would have written to me. Do you remember how Schelly used to give me away when ever you came to Harry's by calling your uncle? That was all the fun. Harry wanted to put Schell up to meanness especially when I would have company. That is when you were there. I am never quite so sleepy of Monday morning since I came over here. Oh, how sleepy I was that night. It rained so hard. That was a night to be well remembered. By the way is Mr. Reed, that is (here there are three hand written capital letters I can't make out), I mean, married yet or not? I heard he was to be some time this month. Mr. Nolan, please excuse this letter, I have written it in a hurry in order to get to mail it, so you will get it today, that is if you should be at the office. Please excuse mistakes and write soon.

I remain, as ever, your friend, Alice N---By by
