MICHAEL HAUSER
By energy and close attention to business, Michael Hauser secured a handsome competency and in 1861 he purchased nearly a hundred acres on Centre Avenue., opposite Charles Evans Cemetery and established there an extensive nursery, which he carried on until the day of his death.
Michael Hauser sold several acres of his valuable premises upon very liberal terms to the
management of the Reading Dispensary, for the purpose of building a hospital.
(The Reading Hospital and Medical Center History)

The Reading Dispensary, Berks County’s first permanent hospital, opened its doors in downtown Reading on January 27, 1868. Begun as a partnership between the area’s business leaders and physicians, The Reading Hospital, as it was then called, moved to northwest Reading in 1886. Subsequently, a growing public demand for hospital care led to constant expansion at this early land-limited location, resulting in the move in 1926 to the present 36-acre site in West Reading.
To reflect the myriad changes in services provided, three words were added to the corporate name in 1974, and today
"The Reading Hospital and Medical Center" remains among the nation’s leaders in high quality, cost-effective health care.
