A Year In The Life of Mary Ann Hess
(1929 ..two years after Chester died)
January
1. I had the flu. Helped Beatrice get dinner. Leo, Ruddy, and Clifford were here
for dinner.
2. I done the ironing. Beatrice done the housework.
3. I was sick abed.
4. I was sick abed.
5. Was raining hard. Cecil and I went to Milan got my pension cashed. Got some
mittens and gloves for Viola, and Kenneth. Sent an order to Sears.
6. Beatrice, Orin, and children, and Birdie went to Britton to church.
7. Just done the housework.
8. Done our washing.
9. Snowed hard all day. At night a Chevrolet truck smashed into a freight that
was going north. Beatrice was looking out the windows and saw it. Clyde, James
and Rachael were here.
10. Was P.T.A. meeting. Miss Bachman and I got up the program. Had a flag drill
besides other things.
11. Done the housework. Got the package from Sears.
12. Just done the Saturday work, was snowing hard. Orin did not come home from
Battle Creek.
13. Was snowing and icy. Clyde, James, and Rachael, and Clifford were here for
dinner.
14. I made some bloomers for myself. Beatrice made her a pair and a white sateen
slip.
15. I cut out some black sateen bloomers. Beatrice made them, too pair for
Viola, too pair for Birdie, could not get any groceries on credit.
16. Beatrice done some sewing, made her a apron and fixed a coat for Junior.
17. We done the washing was storming so hard did not finish the washing. Victor
Powell died at the Ann Arbor Hospital.
18. Was storming hard. Just done the housework. James, Clyde, Clifford, Cora,
Alice, Clark Bachman were here in the evening. Played cards.
19. Was a nice day. We finished the washing. Done the Saturday work. Clifford
and Cecil went to a dance. Leo gave us five dollars.
20. Orin came home and Clifford was here for breakfast. Clifford and Cecil got
home at six o’clock. Beatrice baked pancakes. About five o’clock in the
afternoon Beatrice and family left for Britton to stay all night then go to
Battle Creek. Fay and Bachmans went to Ypsilanti to a show last night. Leo,
Clifford, Ruddy were here for supper. Powells took Victor to Boon.
21. Just done the housework. Pretty lonesome without Beatrice and children.
Clifford came down in the evening we played cards.
22. Just done the housework and wrote some letters.
23. Done the housework. Cecil helped me look over some beans. Clifford, Clark,
Cora, and Alice were here in the evening. Played cards.
24. Done the housework. Finished looking over some beans. Earl came back to
work.
25. Just done the housework. Fay was sick did not work. Leo, and Ruddy came
home. Bachmans had a dance.
26. Just done the housework. Fay did not work. Alice was here in the afternoon.
Leo and Ruddy were home for supper.

29. Cecil helped me. We done a big washing. Washed too bedspreads, one pair
blankets. I walked to the school house after Birdie yesterday. I started to knit
a rug.
30. Just done the housework. And worked at my rug. Fay and Clark went to Ann
Arbor and got a radiator for the car. Cecil worked in Fays place. Last night
Cora, Alice, Clark, and Clifford were here.
February
1. Done some housework and done the ironing. Went to the dance.
2. Done the housework and scrubbed all four floors. Clark swept the floors,
Cecil and I washed the kitchen windows. Cecil and Clifford went to a dance.
3. Done the housework. Clark and Anna, Donald, James, and Clifford were here for
dinner. Leo and Rudy came. Ate a lunch.
4. Done the housework. Worked at my rug.
5. Done the housework. My pension. Cecil, Birdie, and I went to town got some
groceries at the A&P store. Stove repairs came. Clifford came in the evening
helped the boys fix the stovepipe. We played padro.
6. Just done the housework and worked on my rug. Got a letter from grandma Gance
and one from Frankie and one from Beatrice. Clyde, James, Cecil cleaned the
stovepipe in the kitchen stove. Clifford brought down a pint of cream. Clifford,
Clyde, James, Cecil, and Fay played cards.
7. Done the housework. Baked bread. Made a cake. Tried to make ice cream it
would not freeze. Clifford, James, Clyde, Cora, and Clark were here.
8. Done the dishes and done some washing. Cecil hung the clothes on the line. I
did not go to the dance. Leo and Ruddy come home.
9. Done the housework and the washing. Mopped five floors, baked bread.
10. Done the dishes. The boys were up to Bachman’s mostly all day. Was all home
to dinner. Clifford, James, Clyde, Beatrice and family were here.
11. Just done the housework. Cecil, Clyde, and James went to Britton got
Beatrice’s heating stove. Clark helped them put it up. Beatrice got me a bottle
of Thicks, 1lb. butter and some beans.
12. Done part of the washing, washed the white curtains. Leo helped Bachmans fix
furnace. Was home for dinner and supper. I started to crochet a curtain for
Leo’s car.

Birdie, Cecil, and I went with Clifford to Bachman’s dance.
16. Done the ironing, housework and mopped the floors and made a cake. Cecil
worked in Fay’s place. Fay and Rudy went to Ann Arbor with Leo’s car. We got two
new tires from Montgomery.
17. Done the housework. Fay and Clifford went to Saline and over to Clifford’s
folks. Fay got two spare new tires to the garage in Saline. Leo, Rudy, Iva, Ada,
and Greta were here for supper. Cecil, Fay, and Clifford were gone.
18. Just done home housework. Worked at another tidy for Leo, with his name in.

20. Done the housework, made biscuits for dinner and supper, baked bread. Leo,
Rudy, Clifford were here until eleven o’clock

22. Just done some housework, was sick, was too bed nearly all day.

Mr. Bachman took the team and sleigh, we all went over to Clifford’s folks to
the dance. Mr. Bachman, Joe, Cora, Alice, Donald, James, Clark, Anna, Clifford,
Fay and I got home at half past twelve.
24. Done up the work and got dinner, made a cake, put Clifford’s name on it, he
was twenty years old. Made some butterscotch pies. Clifford, Leo, and Rudy were
here for dinner. Rudy gave us a pound of coffee. Clyde and James were here in
the evening, played cards.

School. Tonight Clifford and all of us went to Saline and Milan, got groceries

March

cake.
3. Done the housework. Leo and Rudy, Clifford and Clyde were here for dinner,
had potato salad and baked beans and meat. Clifford got some oysters. We had
oyster soup when the boys got home from town at night.

plants.

yesterday. Cecil stayed over to Clifford’s all night last Wednesday night.

10. ((MaryAnn’s Birthday is the 20th). Done the housework, made a cake, made
biscuits for dinner. Beatrice and family, Leo and Rudy, Uncle Fred were here for
dinner. Beatrice brought me a pocketbook, string of beads, a glass dish. Kenneth
had a apple, Viola an orange in the dish for my birthday present. I went home
with Fred. Mother had a light stroke.
11. Did not do very much, only the housework. I went to the school house with
birdie.
12. Done the housework and a little washing. Granddad took mother and I to see
the place he thought of buying. Done the housework, a little ironing. Got my
slippers an Birdies from Cecil from Sears. Worked at the quilt top mother gave
me.
13. Worked at the quilt top. Granddad went to Clio yesterday to see Grandma
Fast, he comes home today. Nellie and Mae come with him. Nell and Leroy come
home with Fred. Henry and Joyce come, we all had supper. Got a letter from Cecil
today.
14. Done the housework. Granddad took mother and I to Minnies. We had a dinner
there. Minnie give me a silk combination suit, and a pretty card for my birthday
and she gave me a dress and two hats, give me a hat and coat and two dresses for
Birdie.
15. Done the housework, mopped the floors. Mother and I made donuts and cookies,
had a big snowstorm last night. Looked for the boys

watched for the boys.
17. Granddad brought us home around by the Irish Hills. Cecil was over to
Clifford’s Mother give us some potatoes and onions. Granddad went right back.

to school. I baked bread and cookies and cake. Done part of the washing.
Clifford and Paul come over. Clifford and Fay went up to Bachman’s. Paul and
Cecil played cards.

nightdress.
20. Finished the washing. Washed six blankets. Cecil and Clifford helped.
21. Washed all the dishes and cleaned the cupboard. Clifford stayed all night
last night. Had a electric storm. Cecil went to work this morning.

the kitchen windows, baked bread.

28. Beatrice went over to Kendall’s last night, stayed all night. We went to the
schoolhouse to the ball game, Cecil and I. done the housework and ironing.
29. The boys went and got Beatrice last night. We thought we would go to the
dance over to Clifford’s house, got ready and went nearly there, then come back
home. Beatrice and Birdie went back to Kendall’s last night. Was raining. This
morning Fay went and got them. We done the housework. Beatrice done some
washing. I mopped the floors. We all went to town, got Birdies hair cut.
30. I washed the dishes. We all went to Durand in Orin’s car, had a nice time.
Then coming home Orin run into a new Ford ahead of us, bent his radio rods. Got
home half past seven.
April
1. Birdie did not go to school. I washed the dishes, Birdie done the sweeping
and Orin left for Battle Creek. The wind was blowing hard. Worked at the
quilt-top. Clifford was here.
2. Done the housework. I done the dishes, Birdie done the sweeping. The boys
went to town. Clark, Alice, Cora, were here.
3. Just done the housework and finished quilt top.
4. Just done the housework and finished my knitted rug. Leo and Rudy were home.
5. Just done the housework and made Birdie some doll clothes.
6. Done the work, done some washing, mopped all the floors and baked bread, done
some ironing. Leo give us five dollars, we went to town got some groceries. Got
Birdie a pair of slippers. Was awful weather.
7. Done the housework, baked a cake. Leo and Rudy were home for dinner; we had
boiled ham.

9. We went to Mrs. Goethes last night. Birdie and I stayed all night. Cecil come
after us this morning. Peter Danco and the foreman moved in the cars here.

Went down to Goethes.
11. Done the housework and part s of the washing, was raining hard.
1. 12. Finished the washing went to P.T.A. meeting last night. They put me in to
get up the next program.
12. Done the ironing mopped the front the front room and kitchen floors, baked
six loaves. Clifford was here in the evening.
13. Done the housework, made a cake and two pumpkin pies. Had hamburg and pork
sausage. Clifford, Rudy and Leo were here for dinner. Clyde Besbrough come after
dinner. We went to Goethes in the evening, stayed until ten o’clock. Ray Schroen
came home with us.
14. Done the housework; went to Goethes, stayed all night.
15. Went to Goethes. Fay took me, stayed all day, come home at night.
16. Mrs. Goethe died at two o’clock. Stayed all day.

18. Went to Goethes and helped get dinner. Had the funeral in the afternoon. Leo
brought us home. Leo and Fay were pallbearers.

biscuits, mopped the floor.
20. Done the housework, made two butterscotch pies. Leo and Rudy were home for
dinner. Had hamburg and pork sausage. Leo brought us five bushel of potatoes.

a cake. Clark went and got Birdie, Clarabell come home with her.

blankets, Fay’s shirts. Mopped all the floors and waiting room. Beatrice and
family come. Beatrice brought us some A&P salad dressing, a head of cabbage and
some oranges and donuts. Clifford stayed all night.
27. Done the housework. Clifford was here for dinner. After dinner, Marion,
Keith, Mary Ellen, Henry, James, and Ray were here.
28. Just done the housework. Clifford went to work here on the section (640
acres) this morning.
29. Did not do much. Fay was sick Sunday, yesterday and today. They got their
checks. Fay, Birdie, Jimmie and I went to Milan got groceries.

1. Done the housework, baked four loaves of bread and a pan of biscuits. Put the
clothes to soak. Cecil helped me. I stitched all the seams of my quilt on the
sewing machine, fixed a shirt for me. Mariom was here in the afternoon.
2. Done the housework, was raining hard, did not wash, sure had a hard storm.
Finished my spider web lace for pillowcases yesterday, for Naomia a shirt.
3. Done the housework, and rubbed the clothes. Was awful cold and the wind blew
awful, did not hang the washing out.
4. Finished the washing. Birdie helped me. We done the housework and mopped all
the floors, baked eight loaves of bread, done some ironing.
5. Done the housework and made a cake. Clyde Desbrough, Dwaine, Robert Schroen,
Jessie and Cliffton Bird were here last night. They hung a pretty May basket on
our door. Leo, Rudy and Clifford were here for dinner.
6. Beatrice, Orin and children come last night, stayed all night. Orin went back
to Britton this morning, Beatrice and the children stayed here. We done the
housework, had fish for dinner. I got a pretty bunch of Trailing Arbutus from
Lydia this morning. Clifford started boarding here today.
7. Beatrice and I done the housework, made a order to Sears. Fay, Beatrice went
to Saline with Mr. Danco in the Chevrolet. Beatrice took Birdie to school with
the Ford.
8. We done the housework. Beatrice took Birdie to school. I washed my coat and
Cecil’s pants in gasoline. We done the rest of the washing.
9. Done the housework. I went to the schoolhouse when Beatrice took Birdie. I
dressed my coat and Cecil’s pants, done a little ironing, made a cake. Beatrice
made a cake to take to the school-house Got our order from Sears, some cotton
and lining for one quilt, some sheeting and some shirts for Birdie, some
percale, some under-waists for Viola and Kenneth, some romper cloth for Junie.
10. I was sick in bed all day. Beatrice done the work and took Birdie to school.
Done some ironing.
11. I was sick in bed all day. Beatrice and Birdie done all the work, mopped the
kitchen, baked nine loaves of bread. Beatrice and Fay went to town last night
got some groceries. Beatrice, Fay, Cecil and Birdie all got me a pretty plant.
12. Orin come last night. They all went over to Kendall’s and stayed for supper
and all night, came over this morning to see how I was before they went to
church. Mrs. Kendall came home yesterday. Birdie done all the work, Cecil got
the dinner. I helped a little. Leo and Rudy come home. Leo brought me a pretty
plant and some medicine and Birdie a scooter. He gave Fay a dollar. Fay went and
got some butter. We had roast beef for dinner. Mrs. Kendall and Mrs. Danco were
here in the afternoon. Mr. Danco came down in the evening, played cards with the
boys until half past ten. Cecil and Clifford brought home a nice mess of fish.
13. I done some of the housework and cooked the fish. Cecil and Clifford cleaned
them. I felt so sick that I did not watch the fish close enough, so spoiled
them, they were cooked too much. I made two sheets in the afternoon and sewed
the lineing together for my quilt. Mr. Danco came down and played cards with the
boys until nearly ten o’clock. The boys all got breakfast this morning. Just
done the housework, did not feel very good.
14. Done the housework, made me a light percale dress, felt some better.
15. Done the housework and done the washing. Started a dress for Birdie.
16. Done the housework, made Birdie’s dress, bloomers, and jacket.
17. Done the housework and finished the ironing, mopped all the floors, baked a
cake, and pan of beans to send to schoolhouse. Fay and Mr. Danco went to Clare
and Rosebush in the Chevrolet.
18. Done the housework, got dinner. Clyde and Aurthur were here for dinner then
Beatrice, Orin and the children come and had dinner. After dinner Mrs. Kendall,
Marion and Rachel were here. Mr. Shelton and Mae, and June were here, did not
get out of the car. Fay and Mr. Danco got home about seven o’clock, they did not
have a very good time, was too cold.

25. Done the housework, made biscuits for dinner. Did not have any meat. Leo
come home give me $2.00 he had a new camera, took our pictures, he was not here
for dinner. Had quite a crowd out here playing ball.

28. Washed the woodwork in the kitchen. Done the housework. Leo and Rudy come
home brought too chickens. Cecil and I cleaned one then Fay and Cecil cleaned
the other while I cut them up. Was awful hot.
29. Mopped the kitchen and front room and washed the kitchen windows. Put the
table in the front room, took down the heater, made pumpkin pies. Jennie and
family were home. Beatrice and family come but were not here for dinner. The
boys all helped with the work, they played ball in the afternoon.
30. Done the housework. Fred and Clifford and I went over to Beatrice’s. Birdie
went home with Beatrice last night. We had supper over to Beatrice’s. Fay and
Cecil and I.
June
1. Done the housework. Done some washing and ironing. Baked bread, mopped all
the floors.
2. Mr. Danco and Cecil took Bru…(?) and I over to mothers. They come right back.
We stayed. Nellie, John, Leroy were home for dinner. Minnie and family and Mr
and Mrs Perry from Detroit come, and Henry and Nellie and Hazel and Bru--.(?)
3. Birdie done up the work. Mother and I put my quilt on the frame, quilted
some.
4. Done the work and quilted. Birdie and Clifford sprouted (can’t read next
word) peas?
5. Done the work. Quilted some on the quilt. Fred and I went to see Mr. Annimal
about planting beans?
6. Done the work and done the wash, quilted some.
7. Done the work and worked at the quilt. Birdie and Clifford sprouted potatoes
every day. Aunt Neva and Reno were home for supper.
8. Done the work. Fred and I and Clifford and Birdie went to see Gladys, Helen
and the babies, and Aunt Minnie and Aunt Nellie. Mother baked cookies and
donuts. The boys sent my pension. Fred and I went to Mason. Got me a new (?) or
housedress, some milk crock, one for us and one for mother, got a soup ladle,
little dipper, big fork, some cotton for me and Nellie. John and Uncle Hulet’s
folks were here for supper.
9. We all went to Potter Park for the Sowle reunion. Fred bought Birdie a nice
dress and bloomers yesterday. He took Birdie and Clifford to the part. I went
with mother and dad, had a good time. (On the side is written) Fred was going to
bring me Sat. but they all wanted us to go to the reunion.
10. Done the housework. Finished my quilt.
11. Done the work. Put a quilt on the frames for mother. Quilted some, then
Nellie and _ come said they would bring me home if I was ready to come. We had
dinner. I made a cake for mother. We got ready and come home. Stopped in Chelsa
got some groceries.
12. Done the work. Mr. Price, Art and Fred were here.
13. Done the work. Cecil, Birdie, Nellie, John and I went to Beatrice’s.
14. Done the work and done the washing. Nellie and John started for home after
supper.
15. Done the work. Baked bread, mopped all the floors and done the ironing, went
to town. Clifford’ and Cecil went to Ann Arbor.
16. Done the work and got dinner. Leo and Rudy were home for dinner. After
dinner we all went to Milan to the ball game. Urania and Coln played. Coln beat.
Stopped in town and got some ice cream, had ice cream and cake when we got home.
Paul and Leo were here.

18. Went to Jennies in the morning. Mrs. Kendall and the children come home.

20. Done the big dirty washing. Washed both bedspreads. Mrs.. Bowerman was here.
We had a nice visit.

the floors. Baked six loaves of bread, made a cake, went to Bachman’s dance.
Rudy stayed here.
22. Done the housework made a cake. Rudy was here for dinner. The boys played
ball with the Milan team. Milan beat 6-5.

butterscotch pies and some fudge cupcakes.

all went to Saline. Fay got a sticker on his car.

here. Beatrice and family were here for supper. Leo and Mary and Edna come and
took Birdie and I to Porterfield’s dance. Birthday party on Hazel Porterfield.

The boys did not play ball. Coln would not play.
July
1. Done the housework. Clifford went to Ann Arbor paid a fine of $25.00 for
driving without a license on the car and exhaust pipe open. Mr. and Mrs.
Richard’s, Florine were here at night.
2. Done the housework, done some washing. Mariom was here.
3. Done the housework and done some more washing. Leo and Rudy were here for
diner. Leo took me over to Saline, got my express silver ware, bedspread and
bath towels. Beatrice and family come and stayed all night. Beatrice brought
some nice potato salad and cake.
4. Beatrice and I done the work. Mopped the front room and kitchen. The boys
cleaned out the stovepipe. Beatrice and family and Jennie and the children come
home. John went to Toledo. Fay took them to Milan to the train. I went along.
5. Done the housework. Clifford was sick. Harry Porterfield worked here at?
Clifford’s boarded he? Help?
6. Done the housework, baked seven loaves of bread, Clifford took Harry’s car,
took Cora, Alice, Birdie and I over to the Ann Arbor Airport to see the big food
plane. We went to Bachman’s dance, did not stay very long.
7. Done the housework. Mr. Danco took Mrs. Danco, Clifford, Birdie and I to
Milan was going to a ball game but rained too hard, they could not play there.
They got Coln to come here to play. Score was 19-6 in favor of Coln. Leo, Rudy,
and Bob White, and Mr. Richards and ?: and Franklin were here for supper.
8. Done the housework, Made Birdie a dress and bloomers. She went up to
Clarabells for a little picnic. Birdie and Clifford went over to Clifford’s
folks.
9. Done the washing and housework. The boys practiced playing ball.

Birdie’s hair and baked four loaves of bread and a pan of biscuits. The boys

bad.
14. Done the housework, Clifford got his Ford. Clifford, Cecil and Birdie, Clark
and I went over to Clifford’s. His folks were not home. We went to Riggs place,
had a nice time.

berries, did not find any. Leo was home. Leo and Rudy were home for supper. Fay
went to town got the groceries.
16. Birdie and I done the washing and housework. Cecil did not work.
17. We done the housework, baked 4 loaves of bread, a pan of biscuits, made
cookies and fried cakes. Edith Bowerman was out in the care. We had a nice
visit. We washed four blankets too quilt tops and the Indian blanket.

ice cream social. The boys made $5.00. Fay and Clifford went to Ann Arbor in the
afternoon. I got my pension. Cecil, Birdie and I went to Milan, got Birdie some
slippers, stockings and a dress and bloomers.
4. Done the housework. Fay and Clifford stayed all night over to Richards last
night. The boys played ball with Coln, got beat. 10-15 in favor of Coln.
